How to determine and choose Pearl? How to determine and choose Pearl?

Nacre
Lustrous material forms the surface of a pearl is known as nacre, thicker of nacre the greater of value. Though pearls are often evaluated by size, even large pearls without an adequate layer of nacre are little value.
Luster
Luster has the most significant influence on the value of a pearl, thicker of the nacre the deeper the luster, endowing pearls with their beautiful, refined glow. A dull surface indicates a pearl of little value.
Surface
Like other pervious stones, natural blemishes are unavoidable. The number, size & depth of surface blemishes directly affect the value of the pearl.

Shape
Pearls come in many shape. The best are perfectly spherical, followed by balanced, pleasingly, round pearls. Uneven, asymmetrical shapes are less values. Teardrops or other unusual symmetrical shapes are the exception, highly value for their rarity.
Size
The size of the pearl greatly depends on the type of pearl. Freshwater pearls range in size from about 3.0-7.0mm, Tahitian pearls can reach sizes as large as 13mm.
Color
Whether pink, white, silver or gold, the best pearls have clear, distinct colors. Though color is not a true indicator of value. Pinks are the most widely favored shades.
